Management Development
Management development, The ins and outs of successful delegation: how, when and why it works (1)
One of the most important parts about being a successful leader is realizing that everything can’t be done alone. Being a good team leader is about involving the team, not just telling the various members of your team what to do and when to do it. Successful delegation is an important part of any good management development process. Without successful delegation, the success of the whole team may end up suffering in the end.
What is Delegation?
Delegation is the assigning of other tasks to members of the team other than yourself. It is an important part of any good management development process, as it gives leaders the opportunity to assign some of the more minor, yet vital, tasks to other members of the team so that they can focus on other things.
How to Delegate Effectively and With Purpose
Before you start delegating tasks to members of your team, ensure that you are clear on what it is that needs to be done, and the way in which you expect the task to be completed. Select the member of your team in which you plan on entrusting the project to, and be sure to give them all of the information that they need to complete the task.
One of the reasons why it is important to delegate is so that you, as a leader, have time to take care of the various managerial duties assigned to you. When you are delegating tasks to various members of your team, ensure that they have the experience and the skills necessary to be able to complete the task effectively and correctly—the first time, if possible.
Also, when delegating to members of your team you want to make sure that they are able to handle the task you have assigned to them. Make sure that the task that must be done is able to be done on their shift, and that they do not already have as much or more work than they are able to handle.
How to Start Delegating
Letting go is never easy, and the saying ’if you want things done right, do it yourself’ can get in the way of delegating tasks for a lot of people. Of course it is true that the chances of you getting the task done correctly are much higher if you do it yourself, but no successful organization was ever created on the back of one person alone. It is okay to start asking for help; after all, that is what a team is for.
When you first start delegating, it might be helpful to start assigning tasks out that are not vital to the success or operation of the business on an immediate basis, at least until you are more comfortable delegating. Management development is about learning how to supervise a team and use the team to your advantage, and to the benefit of the company.
As you become more comfortable with delegation and your management development process, you can begin to delegate tasks that are of more importance to members of your team that you trust to do them correctly, and on time. It is okay to feel a bit wary of handing out important tasks at first, but proper management development requires that you learn to share the workload—it is an important part of being an effective leader.
