These techniques are based on the claim that management should have an active role in the development of their employees. While employees should also be held accountable for their success, it is overall the responsibility of management to work with these individuals to help them in area of personal development.
Performance management is all about everyone within a particular company improving and achieving a higher level of success. In order to ultimately achieve these goals, the basic essential is a unique collaboration between the employee and the management team. Each employee and management member must have open communication. This will allow barriers to be identified. Once complications are agreed upon, the employee and the manager can develop a plan that will personally address the issue.
When an employee and manager work together, goals should be set. These goals should identify objectives that can be measured. This way, when an employee reaches an important milestone in their overall success, it can be identified. From there, new goals and objectives can be created. These objectives are much like a stairway type of system. The first step is the first objective set. Once the individual reaches the first objective, or step, a new objective is set. Once this achieved, the same type of measurable objective is set. All of these steps work to encourage an individual to maximize their potential in a certain area.
